“Rocket 88″ with Ike Turner’s band and Jackie Brenston on sax and lead vocals was one of the earliest rock ‘n roll hits in 1951, and here’s a Brenston concert poster from the following year when he was very much riding its crest. The location was Phenix City, AL, known as “Sin City” at the time for its fast-paced and shady night life. Brenston was a Chess Records recording artist and tickets could be obtained at Shorty’s Barber Shop and Dr. Jive’s Record Shop! Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com).
