Jimi Hendrix, Doors, Grateful Dead Concert Posters – Authentic or Bootleg?

In this video I display both the original, pre-concert printings and the after-the-fact reproductions of two 1967 concert posters involving the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Grateful Dead and the Doors. Those three legends appear across two posters advertising concerts in Santa Barbara, CA thrown by promoter Jim Salzer. The differences are subtle, but to collectors the stakes are significant! Cast an eye and see if you have an original advertising piece or just a later reproduction… the latter vastly outnumbering the former. Grateful Dead Concert Poster Jefferson Airplane 1960s Hitchhiker

A well-known San Francisco concert poster from March 1968 featuring the high-flying Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, and poster artist Alton Kelley. The show took place at the Carousel Ballroom and one has to wonder how many patrons decided to hitchhike to the show! At least one of the three concerts is available in perfect stereo quality, and tape collectors generally rave about the Dead’s sets during this stand. Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). Bob Dylan Concert Poster 1966 Harmonica & Cigarette Photo

Bob Dylan’s barnstorming 1966 world tour was cited by Mojo magazine as the greatest musical trek in rock ’n’ roll history. Dylan would perform a spellbinding acoustic set and then follow it with an incendiary rock performance backed by The Hawks (later The Band). Here we have two original advertising posters used to sell tickets to a pair of the shows that Spring: March in Vancouver, B.C. and April in Honolulu, Hawaii. Both carry the now-famous, if somewhat understated, photograph of Dylan with harmonica and cigarette. Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). If you’re a fan of 60s Dylan, you can view other vintage concert posters of his on this page of my web site: http://www.postercentral.com/bobdylan.htm

Concert Poster – Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother, Great Society

It was Girls’ Night Out times four in August of 1966 when Janis Joplin, Grace Slick and original Jefferson Airplane singer Signe Anderson took their turns at the mic at the Loser’s South club in San Jose, CA. The Airplane, just about to release their first LP, headlined all four nights. Big Brother & The Holding Company with Joplin opened three of the shows, and on the last night, The Great Society with Slick was the opening act. For two of the nights, admission was only $1.50. Whew! Throw in the fact that this is one of the scarcer concert posters designed by famous Bay Area poster artists Mouse & Kelley, and you have quite a fun item. Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com).
