The first time the Dead ever played in New York City was for this June 1967 residency at the Café Au Go Go in Greenwich Village. The was the same dank, cramped nightclub where Lenny Bruce got busted for obscenity, and the Dead hated it, but they cut their teeth and got their exposure.
