Ella Fitzgerald Chick Webb Concert Poster 1930s Big Band Jazz

Ella Fitzgerald, who would eventually become the world’s “First Lady of Song,” was only 21 years old when this 1938 window card was printed to advertise a concert by her then-boss, big band leader Chick Webb. Ella’s youth and inexperience landed her a spot at the very bottom of the poster, as Webb was very highly regarded in his day and was clearly the star. But he would pass away a year later, after which Ella began her ascent into individual stardom. The poster itself is a minor masterpiece of oranges, blacks and browns, with a striking rendition of Webb’s face dominating the graphics. Bob Dylan Concert Flyer 1960s Tufts University Leaflet

One of the best-looking concert advertising pieces of Bob Dylan’s 1960s heyday, this 8×10” paper handbill hails from Tufts University in Medford, MA. Its classy blue & white layout is adorned with four sharp photographs of Mr. Dylan, plus all the information one needed to order the $2.50-$3.00 tickets by mail order. The March 7, 1964 concert date is extra meaningful because that’s the exact date that Dylan’s third album, “The Times They Are A-Changin’”, first entered the Billboard magazine album charts. Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). BG-1 FD-1 Concert Posters 1966 First in Their Series (Jefferson Airplane)

These are the two posters that launched the Bill Graham Fillmore and Family Dog Avalon series of concert posters that defined an era in late-60s San Francisco. FD-1, the first Family Dog concert poster, features the Jefferson Airplane with Big Brother and the Holding Company (before Janis Joplin joined the group), and is nicknamed “Tribal Stomp.” BG-1, the first poster in Bill Graham’s famed “numbered series” of concert posters, also features the Jefferson Airplane in a much simpler and more straightforward design. Both events took place in February 1966 and the rock-music world would never look back. Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). Stevie Wonder, Temptations Window Card 1960s Chuck Jackson

Two of Motown’s five biggest acts ever, Stevie Wonder and The Temptations, emblazon this beautiful, large 1964 concert poster from Richmond, VA. And both acts were “rookies,” as evidenced by their first big hits being listed on the poster by their names. Stevie had just turned 14 years old and had dropped “Little” from his name in the process. (After all, 14 is so grown up, right?) And the Temps had just experienced their first Top 20 hit, “The Way You Do The Things You Do.” Also shown in this video is a fun, rare 1966 concert poster with the Temptations on it only, and featuring their #1 smash “My Girl.” Both are enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). Miami Pop Festival Posters – Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead 1960s

There were two different Miami Pop Festival concerts in 1968, separated by seven months. Here we take a look at an original advertising poster from each event. The May festival’s poster prominently features The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and in fact mentions no other bands; this poster was also sold as a souvenir at the fest, probably for just a dollar. And the December shindig is represented by a cardboard concert poster which lists no fewer than 30 artists, including The Grateful Dead, Marvin Gaye and Joni Mitchell. Both are enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com).
