This is Part 2 of my video displaying 60s concert posters where a legendary act appeared at the event, but wasn’t yet famous enough to be listed on the advertising poster. In Part 1 we saw two posters that didn’t mention Jimi Hendrix; here in Part 2, we see two posters that neglected to mention… The Doors and Janis Joplin! Hard to believe, but true. And one of these window cards is amongst the most iconic poster images of all time… and since I didn’t previously know, I’ll bet you didn’t either! Can you imagine a concert poster so early in Jimi Hendrix’s career that they didn’t even bother to put his name on the advertising poster to sell tickets, even though he played the event? Well, here we have TWO such examples from 1967, just as Hendrix was starting to get popular. Both hail from New York, where Hendrix simply got lost among all the other musical stars. I can really use some help on this one… can anybody accurately guess what year this gem is from? It dates out to 1920, 1926, 1937, 1943 or 1948, but $2.00 for “gentlemen” would be a very high admission price for those earlier years. Tough to say; feel free to weigh in. Heck I guess it could’ve even been 1954, but Handy was 80 years old by then. Anyway, great-looking vintage poster for the blues legend, and truly an intriguing collector’s item. Bill Haley And His Comets were the world’s first bona fide rock stars, going to #1 with “Rock Around the Clock” while Elvis was still toiling away in C&W honky-tonks. And the first of these two posters I’m showing today harkens from that exact year – 1955. Then I move to 1957 with a fully realized, fully autographed Haley-Comets window card from the Evergreen Ballroom in Olympia, WA. Which of the two do you prefer? The first one is from his peak year, but is a tour blank not yet filled in. The second one is complete and more dynamic, but covered with modern-day Sharpie autographs… a plus for some, a minus for others.
