BB King Concert Posters 1950’s Ruth Brown, Jimmy Reed (Blues, R&B)

Here we have a couple of late-50s colorful B.B. King concert posters that feature a very slim-looking King of the Blues back in his early years. The larger window card is from 1957 and includes stellar opening acts such as Ruth Brown, Bobby “Blue” Bland and Jimmy Reed. The smaller placard hails from 1959 and features an alluring design of alternating blue & orange colors. Admission for both shows was in the $2.00 range, typical for mid-century concerts like this. Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). And if you like great, old blues posters in general, be sure to check out several more which I have displayed on this page right here on my web site: http://www.postercentral.com/blues.htm

Beatles Record Store Display 1960s Promotional Cardboard VJ Records

Here’s one I’ll bet you haven’t seen before… a March 1964 in-store point-of-purchase display advertising sign for The Beatles’ four-song EP on Vee Jay Records. Made of thick cardboard and much larger in size than the EP’s actual picture sleeve, this poster carries the famous Volpe portraits of each Fab’s faces that VJ used so prolifically. It also makes sure you know that it’s a “record” that is being sold, which the EP’s sleeve didn’t need to explain.  A great, fun little item from the peak of Beatlemania, from the same month when the boys enjoyed holding the top five positions on Billboard magazine’s singles chart. Concert Poster 1957 Crickets w/Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino

A remarkable late-50s rock ’n’ roll / R&B concert poster with no fewer than NINE members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame playing this concert – for just $2.00 admission! One of my favorite concert posters in all of collecting, and it’s easy to see why. Beautiful layout, nice colors, awesome performers, great song titles… you name it, this poster has it. For once, it was not hyperbole to call this “The Biggest Show of Stars for ’57.” And luckily, this window card was a “tour blank” that was used for three months across the entire country in the Fall of 1957, so many different cities exist. Jimi Hendrix Experience Concert Poster 1968 Atlanta Vanilla Fudge

A great, beautiful “sister” concert poster to Hendrix’s Columbia, MD Merriweather Post Pavilion poster from the day before (already posted on my blog). Both shows were promoted by Durwood Settles and both posters were designed by D.W. Beeghly, with very similar looks. This one gives much more prominence to the opening acts, including the Vanilla Fudge and Ted Nugent’s Amboy Dukes, and was used to sell tickets for two concerts, not just the one show in Columbia. Lovely dark red and Day-Glo orange colors enhance both. Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). The Impressions, Sam & Dave Concert Posters 1960s Soul Music

Globe Posters out of Baltimore, MD made some of the most appealing concert posters of the 1950s and ’60s (and beyond), with the intent for all posters to be torn down & thrown away the day after the event. Hard to believe now, but true. And here are three examples of Globe in the late ’60s churning out multi-act posters for some of the biggest R&B acts of the day: Sam & Dave plus Curtis Mayfield’s Impressions in 1968, Jackie Wilson in the same year, and The Temptations’ David Ruffin plus Kool & The Gang in 1969. All three posters are quite large, made of cardboard and very colorful. Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com).
