The Doors 1967 Concert Posters – Kaleidoscope, Shrine Auditorium

1967 was the year The Doors burst upon the scene, of course, and here we look at two concert posters and one Elektra Records promo poster from that year. First up is the very psychedelic and ROUND concert poster from the Kaleidoscope nightclub on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood in April of that year; that’s followed by the black & white but beautifully designed Shrine Exposition Hall concert poster from December; and then we close out with the cool promo poster for Strange Days, the Doors’ second album (also from ’67). All three are enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com).

Newport Jazz Fest Window Cards 1960s Concert Posters

A couple of vintage 1960s jazz concert posters that practically fall through the floorboards from the sheer weight of the talent they represent. Both of these original advertising window cards were used to sell tickets to see – are you ready? – Frank Sinatra, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Quincy Jones, Judy Garland, Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Sarah Vaughan, Oscar Peterson, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk… I’m sorry, I ran out of room to list any more. (smile) Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). And if this weren’t enough, to see even more vintage, stellar jazz concert posters, be sure to saunter over to this page right here on my web site: http://www.postercentral.com/jazz.htm

Janis Joplin Fritz Concert Poster 1970 San Jose (Stevie Nicks)

Here’s one you didn’t see coming: A 1970 Janis Joplin concert poster from the Bay Area with Southwind second-billed and a “3rd group to be announced.” Well, it so happens that the third group was none other than Fritz, featuring a very young Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. Miss Nicks was actually able to meet her hero backstage that night, and has discussed it in interviews and biographies. (Why didn’t anyone have a camera, darn it?!) So if you’re strictly a Stevie collector, this poster might be a bit of a stretch, without Fritz’s name on there. But if you’re a Janis fan or collector it’s a great poster, knowing that a present and future queen of rock ’n’ roll did some torch-passing on this occasion. Frankie Lymon, Clyde McPhatter Concert Posters 1950s Rock & Roll

Here’s an interesting contrast in two late-50s vintage concert posters… one of them has a relatively weak line-up of stars but a gorgeous design… and the other has a much stronger talent line-up – everyone’s a member of the Rock ’N’ Roll Hall of Fame – but a much weaker design. Which would you rather own? One of them clearly wins the beauty contest, looking much better on your wall, but the other one is SO exciting for the music that must’ve been played that night. If you’re a fan of Fifties rock & roll, take a look for yourself! Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). And if old 1950s rock ’n’ roll concert posters like this tantalize you, head on over to this page of my web site: http://www.postercentral.com/rocknroll.htm

Rolling Stones Concert Poster 1964 First American Tour

America’s first taste of The Rolling Stones came in June 1964, when the band flew over for their first, brief set of concerts in America, their debut LP first entered the charts, and “Not Fade Away” was inching up the singles charts. It was only the beginning, of course, for the group eventually known as “The World’s Greatest Rock ’N’ Roll Band.” Here I have the pleasure of showing you the earliest known American concert poster for the Stones; likewise with a promo poster for their first album; and a totally mint, unused ticket for their very first show on American soil, in San Bernardino, CA on June 5, 1964. Whew! Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com).
