Beatles Concert Poster 1960s Rare Memorabilia – Aldershot U.K. – Part 1

A true original Beatles concert poster from Aldershot, England on a historic date in Beatles folklore: December 9, 1961.

The Beatles’ 1961 Aldershot dance-show is remembered to this day because only 18 paying punters made it in the door to this cold, winter event. Thankfully, photographer Dick Matthews was along for the ride to take pictures of the Aldershot debacle, and I show you several of his photos in this presentation.

Many years later, in an interview, Paul McCartney himself would recall the Beatles’ Aldershot show as “the time we couldn’t get arrested.”  Aldershot was a little ghost-town military outpost Southwest of London, and to add to their misery, there were stormy winter conditions that night.

This Beatles Aldershot window card is not very big, it was printed on card stock with black & orange letters, and the typesetter used a few different fonts to get the message across.  This exact Beatles Aldershot poster of mine is dry-mounted to a backing material. Despite its humble appearance, I think it’s just about the most important and coolest Beatles concert poster ever made. Why, you ask? Because it’s for the entertainment world’s biggest act ever on their smallest night ever, with great photographic documentation to back it up. I just love the heck out of it, but that’s just my opinion, and perhaps you’d prefer something from after they became famous.

Underscoring my point, however, this exact poster has been displayed to the general public in both the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, CA and at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum in Cleveland, OH. Adding to its cache, it’s also the same poster photographed for Mark Lewisohn’s book The Beatles Live!, which was also a great reference source for my research.

The entire script found on this Beatles Aldershot concert placard, just as it reads from the top to bottom:

BIG BEAT SESSIONS at The Palais Ballroom – (switch to black ink): Queens Road – Aldershot

EVERY SATURDAY Commencing This Saturday December 9th (without the year, but 1961) – Presenting a “Battle of the Bands” – LIVERPOOL v LONDON

(Then in much smaller print): Liverpool’s No. “1” Rock Outfit – (in italics): Direct from Their German Tour – The Beatles – Versus (the solitary orange word here) – One of London’s Top “Beat” Groups – Ivor Jay & the Jaywalkers – Plus Two Other Star Groups

Rocking 7-30 p.m. to 11-30 p.m.  Bar – (then a big space) – Buffet – Admission 5/-  (and then the ultimate irony): Everyone Welcome – Tell Your Friends (but… nobody did!)

None of the other groups mentioned on this Aldershot broadside even bothered to show up, aside from the Beatles… Ivor Jay & The Jaywalkers were total no-shows, as were “two other star groups.”  The Beatles, pros that they were, were left to entertain the 18 troops all by their lonesome.

It’s really funny the way this Beatles Aldershot billboard proclaims, “Direct from Their German Tour.” LOL!  All that means is, they had slaved away in Hamburg the previous spring.  Hyperbole has always been a key ingredient of rock ’n’ roll.

But in this case, the hype was not necessarily without merit: Just five years hence – on December 9, 1966 – the Beatles would be busy recording no less than Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.  Wow, did things ever move quickly in the 1960s!

This Beatles Big Beat concert sign is educationally discussed and enthused over by long-time collector Pete Howard (phone 805-540-0020 or pete@postercentral.com). I’ve had several of my Beatles concert posters in museums, and I pay TOP DOLLAR for this or any original Beatles concert advertising window card / poster.

James Brown Show Poster 1960s Window Card – Eagles Ballroom

A highly attractive early 1960s James Brown concert poster from December 9, 1961 at the Eagles Ballroom in Seattle, WA.

A lot of collectors feel this is the best-looking James Brown concert placard ever made, with its colorful layout of red, green and yellow plus its charismatic design.

This one has it all – lovely graphics, pictures of the musicians, key song titles, big size… everything a collector would want.  Plus, this was the year that JB had four Top 10 hits, adding a little to the poster’s cache.

The entire wording found on this vintage soul music window display, from top to bottom: (First the white venue info): Eagles Ballroom – Seattle, Washington – Sat. Nite, Dec. 9th – Dancing 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

(In the black & red stripe): The James Brown Show – (and then the body of the poster): Featuring In Person the Fabulous James Brown – (and on his coat): “Please, Please, Please” and “Try Me”.

Sugar Pie DeSanto “I wanted to know” [sic – the hit as actually “I Want to Know”], The Famous Flames, Nat Kendricks “Pigs Feet”, The Brownies – 6 Beautiful Dancing Girls! (In the red stripe at the bottom): James Brown Orchestra. (and in bottom white margin): Globe Poster – Baltimore.

This gorgeous James Brown tour window card was designed and manufactured by Globe Poster Company of Baltimore, on cardboard stock, and measures 22 x 28”.

Enthusiastically displayed and discussed by long-time collector Pete Howard (805-540-0020 or email pete@postercentral.com). I (Pete) will pay absolute TOP dollar for a version of this James Brown 1960s concert poster or several other types from the same era – in fact, all 1960s collectible concert memorabilia!

Chuck Berry Concert Poster 1950s Window Card – Segregated Whites!

A Chuck Berry concert poster from Hampton, VA for a show on Nov. 7, 1959 at the Sports Arena, with a bold statement that specifically encourages Caucasian patrons to attend.

This big, cardboard Chuck Berry window card has a “segregation line” or “seg line” for short, which is not common on old show posters from the south, but certainly not unheard of… serious poster collectors are aware of dozens of examples.

The complete and full wording found on this Chuck Berry concert billboard, which, by the way, measures 22 x 28”:

Rock ’N Roll Show – Sport’s Arena [sic] – Hampton, VA. – (in red letters now): Saturday, Nov. 7 – 2 Shows – 8:00 P.M. and 11:00 P.M.

(Back to blue lettering): Advance Admission $1.75 – At Door $2.50. Tickets on sale: B & M Drive In, Hampton; Sports Arena, Hampton; B & M Drive In, Route 17 (doesn’t give a town name); Empire Motel, Buckroe; Yorktown Motor Lodge, Route 17 (likewise); and Other Popular Places.

IN PERSON! Making His First Appearance On The Peninsula For Whites – (in gigantic red letters): CHUCK BERRY – Plus All Star Cast

1950s Chuck Berry concert posters with “Rock ’N Roll Show” plastered across them are definite collector’s items, because they nostalgically invoke the birth of rock.

The bottom of this piece was trimmed off, but just by its appearance, it’s likely that this Chuck Berry concert broadside was printed by Globe Posters in Baltimore.

This 1950s Chuck Berry telephone-pole poster is shown off and lectured about by poster collector Pete Howard (805-540-0020 or pete@postercentral.com). Pete pays the VERY BEST prices for vintage rock & roll window advertising cards like this.

The Doors Concert Poster – Jim Morrison Window Display Placard

An original Doors concert poster from the Boston Arena in Boston, MA on April 10, 1970.

Most Doors concert posters are from the ’60s and were psychedelic in nature, but this cardboard placard depicts Jim Morrison, Robbie Krieger, Ray Manzarek and John Densmore in a straight-ahead, standard B&W design.

It’s easy to see that this Doors telephone-pole poster has creases and general wear and tear, probably due to the elements of being posted outside. Can you imagine if it had been printed on flimsy paper!

This 14×22-inch Doors window card was used for a gig in the L.A. band’s last year of touring, behind their brand new Morrison Hotel album.

The entire wording found on this Doors window herald:

“(Top white area): Friday, April 10 at Boston Arena – (then into the black area): Two Shows 7 and 10 P.M. – The Doors and introducing Gordon Lowe

(In the smallest print): Presented by Fred Samango.  All seats reserved.  (Into the lower white area now): Tickets: $3.50 – 4.50 – 5.50 – 6.50.  On sale at Tyson’s • HUB • Out-of-town Ticket Agencies

Mail Orders To Boston Arena Box Office, 238 St. Botolph Street, Boston (MA of course), Phone: CO 7-3810.  (And then finally, the last line): Please enclose stamped, self-addressed envelope.”

As stated, most 1967-70 Doors concert posters were psychedelic, very colorful, sometimes flowery and printed on paper, and frequently didn’t have a picture of the group. So this Doors window card is an interesting departure in that it’s printed on durable, thick cardboard.

This Doors concert billboard is enthusiastically put on display by collector Pete Howard (email pete@postercentral.com or phone 805-540-0020).  Pete pays the very best prices! for this poster or any old vintage Doors concert posters like this one – or any ’60s stuff.
