Smokey Robinson & The Miracles Concert Poster Motown Sixties

A vintage concert poster for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles appearing on June 1, 1966 at the Continental Club in Oakland, CA.

This original window card measures 14×22” and was produced by Tilghman Press of Oakland, California.

This concert placard was designed with the popular “boxing-style” look featuring block lettering, lots of song titles, pictures of the acts and ticket-purchasing information. It’s these elements which comprise a classic concert billboard from the Sixties (not including, of course, the entirely different psychedelic world).

The timing of this show was perfectly placed in the Miracles’ career, because Going to a Go-Go, their most recent album, was the best-seller of their career,, and it spawned no fewer than four Top 20 pop singles, including the classic “Tracks of My Tears.”

For your convenience, the complete text as seen on this vintage soul music telephone-pole card:

(Bright red lettering): See The Mighty Miracles At… Continental Club. (Small lettering): 1658 – 12th St., Oakland – From 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. – (Back to large lettering): Wed. Nite, June 1, 1966

(Red fading to blue lettering): Smokey Robinson and the Miracles – “You Really Got A Hold On Me,” “Going To A Go-Go,” “Mickey’s Monkey”

(Blue fading to black lettering now): and The Fabulous Ballads (with a photo of them) – “I Can’t See Your Love” –plus- Eddie Foster, Wally Cox and Terrible Tom – Singing Many Great Hits

(And then the details): Advance Sale Tickets $2.50, At Door $3.00 – Tickets On Sale At Music City Only.  Another Fields Promotion.  (And finally, in tiny print on the bottom border): Tilghman Press, 1217 – 32nd St., OAK. – 653-4388

Original concert posters featuring Motown Records acts such as the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, etc. are generally scarce and therefore quite collectible.

This vintage Motown concert poster is enthusiastically displayed and fawned over by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). And yes, I will pay top dollar for this or any other similar vintage concert placard, as long as it’s not a bootleg.

Billie Holiday Concert Poster Artie Shaw 1930s Window Display

Although her name appears nowhere on this poster, this can easily be called an authentic 1930s Billie Holiday concert poster.

That’s because this Artie Shaw window card states “And His Orchestra,” without naming Billie or any of the other individual musicians.

This is s shame, because Chick Webb’s 1938 concert window cards all listed Ella Fitzgerald on the poster as his singer. However, Ella was with Chick Webb for years and Billie was with Art Shaw for just months.

It’s interesting to note that almost any 1938 Art Shaw concert poster would feature Billie Holiday in his orchestra, with the exception of the earliest and latest months of that year.

Additionally, there exists a 1939 Jimmie Lunceford concert poster that includes Billy Holiday down near the bottom, misspelling her name. So that pains me about this Shaw poster even more!

And wait, there’s more: there’s a ’30s Count Basie concert poster which mentions Billie Holiday down at the bottom. One version of this 1937 Basie window card states “Featuring Billie Holiday and James Rushing,” whereas another version mentions just Rushing.

Collectors who desire a concert poster dedicated to Lady Day herself, and not a big-band leader, can chase after a 1940s Billie Holiday concert poster from Sacremento, Calif. dated Tuesday, March 1, without the year being mentioned. 1949 is the year on that one, and the state capitol of Sacramento is erroneously spelled.

Big-band and jazz telephone-pole concert posters from the 1930s and ’40s, and for that matter to this very day, were made of stiff cardboard to help ward off inclement weather, especially moisture.

Back to my video now: this Art Shaw concert placard features colors of orange and black, and contains a sketch of Shaw’s face, not a photograph.

The dimensions of this big-band concert billboard are 14 by 22 inches, very much the standard for such posters.

While this concert broadside uses the name “Art Shaw,” notice that I trade off that name with “Artie Shaw” because the latter is how the legendary clarinetist was better known.

Here is what this poster says, from top to bottom: CRYSTAL (name of the ballroom) – Thurs. Sept. 1 – (And then a plug for another act, most unusually): Every Saturday Jay Van’s Orchestra

In Person – King of the Clarinet – Art Shaw and his Orchestra

(In very bottom margin): Management: Rockwell O’Keffe, Inc. – Rockefeller Center, Radio City, N.Y. – 32 West Randolph Street, Chicago, Ill. (on Chicago’s famous “loop”) – 8949 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, Calif. (on the famous Sunset Strip).

As always, this early vintage jazz concert poster is discussed with high enthusiasm by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email address pete@postercentral.com). I’m a huge, huge Lady Day fan and will pay top dollar, period, for any old, original Billie Holiday concert poster like these.

Jimi Hendrix Experience Concert Poster Germany 1969 Wire Hair

An authentic 1969 concert poster for the Jimi Hendrix Experience in Germany, with the famous “wire-hair” image designed by poster artist Günther Kieser.

This image was a “tour blank” used for a number of dates on the Experience’s January 1969 tour of Germany. For each tour date, the appropriate information was printed in the white space below.

Knowledgeable poster collectors are aware that the January 15 version of this poster from Stuttgart was simply a souvenir merchandising poster sold at Jimi’s concerts, in addition to other outlets. Therefore, that one version is not an advertising poster.

Otherwise, this Gunther Kieser Hendrix concert poster was used to sell tickets for the guitarist’s 1969 German tour dates of January 11 in Hamburg; January 12 in Düsseldorf; January 13 in Cologne; January 14 in Münster; January 15 in Munich; January 16 in Nuremburg; January 17 in Frankfurt (the one in this video); January 19 in Stuttgart (not Jan 15, like the merch poster); and January 23 in Berlin.

The complete wording as it reads on this poster, from top to bottom: Jimi Hendrix – Presented by Lippmann-Rau (the promoters).

(Now at the bottom in white space): Experience. Feat: Eire Apparent (the opening act).

17 Freitag, 17. Januar ’69, 19 + 21.45 Uhr (translation: Friday, January 17 at 7:00 and 9:45 PM)

Frankfurt Jahrhunderthalle Höchst Karten (ohne Vorverkaufsgebühr) ab DM 6,- (the venue and ticket price)

im Vorverkauf; Phonohaus; Pavillon der Städt. Bühnen; Verkehrsverein; Jahrhunderthalle und bek. Vorverkaufsstellen (the locations to buy tickets)

Anyway you look at it, this Jimi Hendrix concert poster by Kieser is a true masterpiece of beautiful design and colors that demands respect almost half-a-century later. It remains one of the most enduring images, of any kind, from the psychedelic Sixties.

Enthusiastically displayed and discussed by collector Pete Howard (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). As a lifelong Hendrix fan who owned his three albums at the time and saw him in concert in 1970, I will pay top dollar for this or any original Jimi Hendrix Experience concert posters from 1967-1970.

Etta James Bo Diddley Window Cards 1950s R&B Revue Shows

Two gorgeous, colorful ’50s Top 10 Rhythm & Blues Review concert posters, both sharing Etta James and Bo Diddley early in their careers, and both featuring a lot of other significant Fifties R&B musicians at the dawn of rock ’n’ roll in 1955.

Other important artists found on these scarce R&B window cards include The Clovers, The Five Keys, Jimmy Witherspoon, Big Joe Turner, Bill Doggett and Faye Adams.

Globe Poster Company of Baltimore, MD printed up these splashy, multi-artist concert posters, which also go under the name of placards, billboards, broadsides, etc.

Globe Poster’s window-card displays for rock and roll and R&B concerts have a special charm among fans and collectors. They usually had very colorful graphics, and future members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame always seem to be present.

Both posters had white spaces at the top for individual tour stops to be printed in with ticket price, venue, date and time of show. The red & green poster has those details printed in, whereas the blue & purple one does not.

As always, I will pay top dollar for vintage 1940s-1960s rhythm & blues concert posters like this. Please do contact Pete Howard at (805) 540-0020 or pete@postercentral.com.

The complete wording found on the red & green poster… starting with the venue information: Concert & Dance – Memorial Aud., Chattanooga – Tues. Sept. 27 at 8 P.M. – Advance $1.50 – At Door $2.00

And then the color section: 1955 Fall Edition – Top 10 Rhythm & Blues Review – On Stage, In Person, All-Together…

Faye Adams – “Hurts Me To My Heart” and “Shake a Hand”; The Clovers, America’s Top Quartet; Checker Records’ Bo Diddley, “I’m a Man” and “Bo Diddley”; Big Joe Turner, “Honey Hush”; Bill Doggett, Hammond Organ Stylist;

The Charms, “Hearts of Stone”; Charlie and Ray; Paul Williams Big Band, “Mr. Hucklebuck”; The Five Keys, “The Glory of Love”; and in the bottom green stripe, Etta James and the Peaches; Al Jackson, formerly of Patterson-Jackson; and Gene & Eunice, “This Is My Story.”

And the wording on the blue & purple poster is as follows, exactly: The Little Big Show (headline at the top; then) The… Original Bo Diddley Man Himself… “I’m a Man” and “Bo Diddley”; Modern [Records] Recording Star Etta James and The Peaches, “Dance with Me Henry” and “Wallflower”; Charlie & Ray, “Certainly Baby” and “Dearest One”; Jimmy Witherspoon, “When the Lights Go Out”; and Jon Thomas and his Orchestra. And then the printers’ name, Globe Poster – Baltimore.

Willie Nelson Concert Poster 1960s Grand Ole’ Opry & Tex Ritter

A vintage, genuine Willie Nelson concert poster from Kansas City, Kansas in 1963 with a few stars of the Grand Ole’ Opry sharing the bill with Willie.

This boxing-style billboard / broadside was printed by the Colorcraft Poster Co. of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and measures 14 inches wide by 22 inches tall.

This original country music window card has Hall-of-Famer Tex Ritter headlining, along with new star Bill Anderson.

Willie Nelson was still mainly known as a songwriter in 1963, not a recorder of hit records. Fortuitously, this concert placard shows two of his biggest compositions ever, right under his name: “Hello Walls” and “Crazy.”

Don’t check out early, because at the end of this video I pull out a Patsy Cline concert poster from 1960 to flash you. (It doesn’t get its own video because it’s pretty plain-looking.)

Both C&W posters enthusiastically shown off by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (cell phone 805-540-0020, email address pete@postercentral.com).

And if older country-music concert posters like this thrill you, you can catch a few more on this page located right here on my web site: http://www.postercentral.com/country.htm
