Charles Brown Window Card, Percy Mayfield Concert Poster 1950s

Here we have a pair of scarce 1952 concert posters from Charles Brown and Percy Mayfield, two practitioners of slow, smoky, piano-bar rhythm & blues music in the post-war era. Both are very colorful window cards from the deep south, with catchy graphics, loads of song titles and tons of history behind them. They’re also both “tour blanks,” with Mayfield’s specific concert information machine-stamped in, and Brown’s written in by hand. Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). If you love old R&B concert posters like this, be sure to go see more of them displayed on this page located here on my web site: http://www.postercentral.com/rhythmnblues.htm

Jimi Hendrix Experience Concert Posters – Wash. D.C. & Philly 1968

1968 was probably Jimi Hendrix’s best year, and he toured incessantly. And yet his management never used a so-called “tour blank” concert-poster template, so that means for every individual show Jimi gave that year, some local poster artist would design a concert poster for that one event only, never to be used again. Here are a couple of great examples from March of 1968, from Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia. Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). For more images and a further explanation of how tour blanks are used (including Hendrix), view this page located here on my web site: http://www.postercentral.com/whentourblanksnotused.htm

Santana Concert Poster 1968 Lee Conklin Classic Artwork BG-134

On the rare occasion when a concert poster subsequently gets turned into album-cover art, that poster quickly becomes immortalized. Such is the case with this summer 1968 masterpiece by poster artist Lee Conklin. It’s often thought of as “a Santana concert poster” because that band turned it into the cover of their debut LP in 1969. But it was really a series of six shows at the old Fillmore West that headlined the Grateful Dead and Steppenwolf; Santana was third-billed and largely unknown outside the Bay Area. All of this beautiful poster’s intricate aspects are enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). And if you’re fond of great psychedelic poster art, be sure to see more on this page of my web site which you’re on: http://www.postercentral.com/psychedelic.htm

Buddy Holly and the Crickets Concert Poster w/ Everly Bros. 1958

One of the best-looking and most exciting 1950s rock ‘n roll concert posters you’ll ever see, period. This January 1958 gem features a wonderfully colorful line-up of household names and long-gone one-hit wonders. Buddy Holly and the Crickets are down-billed but the star of the poster, because one year later, Holly would be dead. The Everly Brothers dominate the poster because they were riding a highly influential crest of timeless hit singles. And almost everyone else had at least one big Top 40 hit that evokes the “American Graffiti” era. Tough to fit it all into one video, but enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). If you love Fifties rock & roll and have a pulse, there’s more to faint at here: http://www.postercentral.com/multi-act_1950s.htm

Bob Dylan Concert Poster 1965 Acoustic & Electric Sets (3 Different)

Bob Dylan was once called “the coolest person on the planet” in 1965, and it would be hard to disagree. Here we have not one, not two, but three vintage Dylan concert advertisement posters from ’65, both before and after he added his full electric-band sound in the summer. From New England to Southern California, these three posters represent Dylan in his most revolutionary year, and are great collector’s items that have been often bootlegged. But not here… these are the stone originals, printed before the shows in each case. Enthusiastically discussed by collector Pete Howard of PosterCentral.com (phone 805-540-0020, email pete@postercentral.com). If you’re a major Bob fan, be sure to see the other vintage 60s Dylan concert posters I display on this page here on my web site: http://www.postercentral.com/bobdylan.htm
